Installing the 710 & 720 series Printer on your Computer

The first step in connecting the printing feature is to install the relevant software for the printer on the computer.

Please note: The 700 series brother printers (Brother QL-710W and Brother QL720NW) has been discontinued by Brother. It is still supported to be used for name badge printing with zkipster. But we recommend that users purchase the 800 series instead (Brother QL-810W, Brother QL-810WC, QL820NWB and QL820NWBC).

To ensure that first time setup is correct and easy, it's recommended to closely follow the instructions for printer installation by Brother.

Brother has different drivers for each compatible label printer. Visit the Brother website and download the driver software, click: for the 710 model and for the 720 model. From those pages click:

  1. Downloads

  2. Select operating system

  3. Download the Printer Drive

  4. Download the Printer Setting Tool

Some tips for an easier install:

  • Only plug the printer in via USB when the Brother instructions tell you to.

  • Make sure the power cord is properly inserted.

  • To benefit from Brother’s 24/7 support service we suggest that you download the Brother iPrint and Label App on your iPad.

Go to this link to download the driver, wireless setup from the Brother website. You will most likely be prompted to download Java as well while going through the set up on the desktop.

Installing the 810 & 820 Series Printers

The 810 and 820 series are the newest printers from Brother and are extremely easy to set up. These printers allow for a quick connection via Bluetooth or WiFi and do not require installing any software.

Click here for the 810 series or here for 820 series.

The set up should be fairly straight forward but keep these items in mind:

  • When connecting by WiFi, sign into the WiFi on the printer and then make sure the iPad is connected to the same WiFi network.

  • When connecting via Bluetooth it's only possible to connect one device to the printer at a time.

  • It's recommended to use WiFi connection for best results as Bluetooth transfer speeds are always slower.

  • zkipster recommends to use no more than two devices connected to one printer at a time when using WiFi for optimal performance.

Connecting the Printer to an iOS Device

Make sure that your iOS device is connected to the same wireless network as the printer if connecting by WiFi.

It is possible to change the printers via the 'Printer Settings':

  1. Open the zkipster app

  2. Select the event

  3. Tap on 'More' in the bottom right corner

  4. Under Event Settings, tap on 'Printer Settings' and go to 'Printer'

  5. Tap on the printer of your choice via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

Once the badge printer is connected the printer name will have a check-mark beside it:

Please note: If the printer paper dimensions on the app do not match your template choice, you will be reminded to print a test badge to check if you need to make any changes:

The 'Printer Settings' will also display the specific settings for the connected printing device. This is also where you can change the 'Custom Paper Length', toggle the 'Auto Print' to ON and select the 'Quality' of the Name Badge Printing as Low Resolution, Normal, Double Speed and High Resolution.

Troubleshooting

Please ensure that you allow the zkipster app to access the WiFi and Bluetooth functions of your mobile device when prompted.

If you did not allow zkipster these permissions in the first instance, please go into your device settings and allow zkipster to access these features.

On iOS

  • Settings

  • Scroll down to and select the zkipster app

  • toggle on Bluetooth or Local Network for WiFi connections

  • Close the zkipster app and reopen to try and connect to the printer

  • If the above does not work, uninstall the app, restart your device, and then re-download the zkipster app. You will then be prompted in app to allow zkipster access to the Bluetooth and Local Network functions.

Android
(Please note the below steps may vary slightly across different Android models)

  • Settings

  • Under "App Settings" go to "Installed apps"

  • Once you have selected the zkipster app, you will find a permissions section to allow the zkipster app to use Bluetooth and WiFi functions

  • Close the zkipster app and reopen to try and connect to the printer

  • If the above does not work, uninstall the app, restart your device, and then re-download the zkipster app. You will then be prompted in app to allow zkipster access to the Bluetooth and WiFi functions.
